Welsh Athletics have released this information recently ahead of the 2019 Virgin Money Giving London Mini Marathon on Sunday 28th April 2019 - New Approach to selection being trialled that athletes, parents and coaches need to be aware of.

The Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon takes place on Sunday 28th April 2019 and is the official British Athletic three-mile road championships for young athletes aged between 11 and 17. The race is open to entrants from the nine regions of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, and teams from all 33 London Boroughs.

Wales has a strong heritage in this event with notable wins at both Team and individual level in previous years, including in 2006 when Dewi Griffiths was the individual winner, and part of a team including Adam Bitchell, Rowan Axe and Joshua Harris who won team Gold. Three of these have gone on to represent Wales at the Commonwealth Games. Welsh Athletics are committed to continuing this tradition by ensuring they send the brightest talents from across the country to experience this high-level competition.

Welsh Athletics have now taken over selection and support for the Wales team from Welsh Schools Athletics Association in 2019. The races are a high-profile opportunity for the best young athletes in Wales to compete against athletes from across the UK. A new approach to selection will be introduced this year with the intention of increasing the opportunity from all regions to gain selection.

Each home nation has a Team Manager who is responsible for selecting a team to take part in the Virgin Money Giving Mini London Marathon, which also doubles as the British Athletics three-mile road championships.

Teams are made up of 36 runners per region/home nation. The age groups are Under 13 boys (year 7 & 8), Under 13 girls (year 7 & 8), Under 15 boys (year 9 & 10), Under 15 girls (year 9 & 10), under 17 men (year 11 & 12) and Under 17 women (year 11 & 12).

These are road running age groups (the same as your current cross-country age group).

How do I get selected to represent Wales?

For 2019, selection will be based on 3km time trials held on the track in each of the four regions towards the end of January 2019. The winner in each age group in each region will be automatically selected plus then the next four "fastest losers" across all four regions - two to complete the team of six and two as reserves. The reserves will only travel to London if they are called up to the team in the lead up.

  • Winner North, Winner East, Winner West, Winner South + next 4 fastest overall to give a team of 6 plus 2 reserves per age group.
  • Total team of 36 plus 12 reserves.

When is the West Wales Region Trials taking place?

The West Wales Region 3K time trials for the London Mini Marathon will be held at Carmarthen Harriers Athletics Track in Johnstown SA31 3NQ on Monday 28th January 2019. The date of 23rd as advertised on the Welsh Athletics website shall remain correct for the other regions, however due to the Dyfed cross country, the West has changed.

The track is booked for 6-8pm, a timetable will be advertised on the Welsh Athletics website before the event.

This is open to any athlete who wishes to participate, therefore no emails will be sent to individual athletes. Athletes are to enter on the evening in the portacabin by 6pm on the 28th. There is no entry fee.

The evening will begin at 6.30pm with the final information, before the under 13 age groups go first, running at 15 minute intervals between each race. If numbers are low, it is possible that the boys and girls will combine therefore athletes should come along prepared for a slight change to any published race time.

Qualified track judges and timekeepers will officiate the event, but this will NOT be held as a permit meeting and times will NOT go on Power of 10. Results will be published following the event on the Welsh Athletics website.
